The Iran Culture and Educational Center (ICEC) community and the many opportunities presented to me through the ICEC have greatly influenced my growth as an individual. I have been involved with ICEC as a student, as a teacher’s assistant for the Kindergarten class, and as a dance instructor for the school’s Persian Dance Troupe.

The leadership opportunities I had during my teaching years at ICEC have immensely aided in the development of my communication skills and of my self-confidence. As a student in the Gemstone Program at the University of Maryland, I had the opportunity to investigate a self-proposed research topic with fellow undergraduate students throughout the entirety of my undergraduate studies. My team’s focus was evaluating the effects of electrical stimulation applied by linear versus radial electrodes on the healing rates of diabetic ulcers. Working on a small research team, strong communication skills and the ability to, when needed, assume a leadership position were vital for our team’s success.

Additionally, my knowledge of several languages has been a great asset both in my personal life and in my professional life.  I am pursuing a career in dentistry where communicating with patients in a way that makes them feel comfortable is key. ICEC has helped me to greatly improve my Persian language skills, which I hope to pass on to my children in the future.

In Spring 2014, I graduated from the University of Maryland, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Neurobiology and Physiology. In the fall, I will begin my studies at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry in Baltimore. I will always cherish my times at ICEC and I plan on staying involved with the ICEC community as I continue my education.
