 Listening Comprehension

I can understand the main idea in messages and presentations on a variety of topics related to everyday life and personal interests and studies.  I can usually understand a few details of what I overhear in conversations, even when something unexpected is expressed.  I can sometimes follow what I hear about events and experiences in various frames.  (Interpretive Listening)

Students can …

1.  Understand the main idea and supporting details in conversations, discussions and oral presentations.
2.  Understand the main idea and supporting details in messages and announcements on familiar topics.
3.  Understand the main idea and some details on familiar topics presented via media.
4.  Follow oral directions in correct order.
5.  Identify an object, a person, and an event when they are being described.
6.  Identify cities or countries through active listening to the description of  their geographic location.

Speaking

I can participate in conversations on familiar topics.  I can usually talk about events and experiences in various time frames. I can usually describe people, places, and things.   I can handle social interactions in everyday situations, sometimes even when there is an unexpected complication.  (Interpersonal Communication)

I can make presentations in a generally organized way on school, work and community topics, and on topics I have researched.  I can make presentations on some events and experiences in various time frames.  (Presentational Speaking)

Students can…

1.  Engage in a conversation on familiar topics, such as likes and dislikes, academic subjects, past and present personal experiences, and future plans.
2.  Ask for and provide information about specific events.
3.  Use some connected sentences when expressing opinion on familiar topics.
4.  Summarize a story line using connected sentences.
5.  Give personal views and opinions on familiar topics.
6.  Ask a variety of questions on familiar topics.
7.  Make a presentation on something learned in class using connected sentences and some details.
8.  State an opinion and give supporting reasons using connected sentences.
9. Ask for, follow, and give direction for preparing selected dishes.
10. Discuss favorite travel destinations, their geographic location, what to do and places to visit.

Reading

I can understand the main idea of texts related to everyday life, personal interest, and studies.  I can sometimes follow stories and descriptions about events and experiences in various time frames.  (Interpretive Reading)

Students can…

1.  Understand messages in which the writer tells or asks about familiar topics.
2.  Understand the main idea when reading for personal enjoyment or when reading for information.
3.  Understand information about major world events from short and simple articles.
4.  Research short articles of factual information.
5.  Understand main ideas and some details when reading narratives, and other fictional and non-fictional writings (that contain some unfamiliar vocabulary – Sometimes).

Writing

I can write on topics related to school work, and community in a generally organized way.  I can write some simple paragraphs about event and experiences in various time frames.  (Interpretive Writing)

Students can…

1.  Write a paragraph to describe an object, a person, an experience, or a place.
2.  Express an opinion on a familiar topic using paragraph form with some supporting details.
3.  Write about present and past experiences, or future plans using some connected sentences.
4.  Summarize selected reading materials using connected sentences.
5.  Compare things using connected sentences.
6.  Describe an event that they participated in.
