New School Year

Dear Students,

As we prepare to begin a new school year, on behalf of the ICEC administration, the instructional staff, and myself, I would like to welcome you and wish you a very successful and rewarding academic year. We are excited to see so many of you who will be returning this year and to have the opportunity to greet and to know many new students who will be joining us for the first time. As always, our goal is to help you make the most of the instructional time by having an in-depth understanding of the Iranian cultural heritage and by gaining proficiency in the language in an engaging and learner-centered environment. The fact that you are spending part of your Saturdays participating in our classes is a reflection of your commitment to achieving this goal. Your enthusiasm and love of learning are crucial in preserving our cultural heritage and language.

As part of our ongoing efforts to achieve our common goal more effectively, last year made some changes to the way we would be communicating with you throughout the year. Now, through the enhanced ICEC website, you will be able to communicate with your instructors and access lessons, homework assignments and projects online. Your instructors will provide you with more information. We will also make every effort to differentiate the instruction based on proficiency levels to maximize learning. As part of this effort, the posted weekly “Can-Do” statements and ongoing formative assessments will allow you to better measure your own progress throughout the year. As the year goes on, we will review, reflect and readjust the instructional strategies to better meet your needs.

Welcome message in Persian

پیام خوش آمد

25th Anniversary

Dear ICEC Family,

I want to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude for everything you have done not only for the conference and the gala, but also throughout the years. Your dedication has been the cornerstone of our institution, without which we wouldn’t have been here. The ICEC owes its success to every one of you who have dedicated your time and energy to this institution year after year.
The ICEC 25th anniversary was only a means to celebrate young Iranian-Americans’ achievements. The main goal of the event was to create a forum for our alumni and other young Iranian-Americans to network and through their personal and professional stories inspire younger students and alumni. We were all there because of this young generation that has experienced the value of belonging to more than one culture and one language and is a role model and mentor for the younger generation. All panelists, without exception, through their unique and moving stories, delivered a powerful message about ways in which their bilingual education has helped them personally and professionally. Their stories, sometime blended with tears of gratitude, were proof that your efforts as parents and ours as educators have not been in vain. This profound commitment to preserving cultural heritage as an invaluable asset is the underlying value that brought us together on Saturday. Without this strong commitment, our center, that began 25 years ago with a modest number of students and classes, wouldn’t have become a community, as we know it today. We have become a community thanks to the unwavering support of all of you; our dedicated staff who have gone above and beyond to create the best possible learning environment for our children despite all the challenges; our alumni and students who have been our source of energy and excitement; and our parents who have supported us in any possible way. I am grateful to every one of you for your tireless work, steadfast support and dedication.

Warm wishes,

Iran Arbabi

New Website and ICEC 25th Anniversary

Our primary goal in launching this new website is to create a platform that will help promote heritage languages and cultural understanding through ongoing conversation with you: current and former students, parents, and also the community at large. Such a dialogue is indispensable to any serious effort that aims to explore and identify ways we can work together as a community to achieve this goal. Exposure to more than one language is the key to this understanding. Each new language is indeed a window to the world; is indeed an awareness that leads to the appreciation of cultural diversity and the realization that what unites the world cultures is more important than what divides them. Without understanding the importance of heritage languages and valuing them as an asset, no conscious effort can be made in preserving them.

The launch of this new website coincides with the 25th anniversary of ICEC and, more importantly, with a time when we are preparing for an important event in the fall to celebrate the achievements of young Iranian-Americans. This will be a reunion of ICEC alumni and other young Iranian-American and is planned to be a forum during which you will have the opportunity to hear about the latest research findings on heritage languages from experts in the field, to discuss ways to get involved in the community to promote Persian language and culture, and to lay the foundations of a professional networking. We invite all ICEC alumni, their families and friends as well as all former ICEC teachers to this educational and social gathering. We are hoping this to be the beginning of a wide network of young Iranian-Americans across the United States. We are anxious to greet our current students, but also our alumni whom we haven’t seen since they left us. Perhaps we will find you much different from the time we last saw you, but we will certainly remember your faces which will bring back memories of those years during which we greeted you and taught you every Saturday.

This reunion is especially significant from the standpoint of the current Iranian-American population. Over the last 25 years, our student body has gradually changed to a new generation; students of yesterday have become parents of today. An increasing number of current parents are those who came to this country with their parents at very young age and now are following in the footsteps of their parents by passing on the torch of Persian culture to the next generation. It is indeed an uplifting feeling to see so many young Iranian-American parents, many from mixed families, not giving up on their cultural heritage. Equally rewarding is the increasing interest in Persian language and culture among the general American population. We are at a juncture where all arrows point to a promising future; a promising future that is no doubt the direct result of our joint genuine efforts as a community in preserving our cultural heritage.
